A smart note about character
If we understand ethos as character, then it cannot be about doing. Ethos is about being and becoming. We cultivate character by doing good things, and then other people will notice that we are doing good things and they will be attracted to us. This is the basic human mechanism for developing character.
We are not born with ethos or character. We cultivate this as a part of our daily life. Even the smallest habits can lead to big changes in our ethos down the road. For example, if you want to have a kind heart, it begins by simply being kind to others. The more we do, the better we become at doing. Then, when the time comes to persuade others, our ethos is there working with us, instead of us trying to create an ethos on the fly.
There are many other ways in which we can cultivate our the character behind our ethos, but all of them require intentionality. We must sit down and think about what ethos we want to develop and plan our activities around these goals. We need to be aware of our choices. We can also develop our own ethos through our relationships with other people, while also nurturing and supporting those around us as they develop their own ethos.
