I totally get your ethical concerns about AI writing tools ... and there are definitely issues that we need to deal with and talk about in our classes.
While companies may have "stolen data" to train their models (yet, to be determined in courts), using the technology is not stealing.
LLMs make guesses based on statistical models, much like when you use the autocomplete function on your phone. They are not referencing any specific piece of data or copying anyone's text.
Accusing students of stealing obfuscates the very real ethical issues that we should be dealing with like machine bias and data privacy.
